- I have an oppurtunity to take an offer from my cable provider, which
- is to hook up to the net with a cable modem. The direct connection is
- being made available to fibre optic cable subscribers. They have
- installed a separate cable line to my computer. They are going to
- install a special board, and then I'll be off and running. My question
- is, does anyone know if these modems are any good. The cable company
- doesn't even know how much they will charge for them. The idea of
- downloading at 10Megabytes per second is overwhelming! I am not going
- to cancel my PPP account until this thing works. They came to me
- originally about 2 months ago, but it would not run under win95. They
- actually asked me to reinstall my win 3.11. I laughed and said, later.
- They called the other day to say it will support win95 now. So I think
- I'll give them another chance. It will cost only 7.95/month until
- March, when they'll have rates comparable to regular modem providers.
- The idea of not having a dedicated telephone line to my computer is
- appealing. Also, of course, the very fast speeds. Someone said win95
- will need a network card for this type of modem to work. This I don't
- know much about, and frankly, the cable people are just trying to work
- out the bugs themselves.
- The funny thing is, they don't even have a news server. A mail server
- should be ready next week. So, actually the onlyl access is to the
- web, and irc. Comments appreciated.
